| THE KEY FALL 2006 DON’T MISS – THE CANDIDATES FOR PRESIDENT-ELECT’S PLATFORM STATEMENTS AT THE CONCLUSION OF THIS NEWSLETTER. President’s Report Fall 2006 Sandy Alspach, Ph.D – Ferris State University Your National Council met during the summer at the site of our 2007 National Tournament and Convention, lovely Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Our host Ed Hinck gave us the “royal tour” of the campus and community, and we left confident that Central Michigan University will provide excellent facilities for an outstanding tournament. We held our meetings and stayed overnight at the proposed convention hotel. After much deliberation, we agreed that the facility just was not big enough for the numbers of you I am confident will come to our awards banquet. So, we are moving the Convention business meetings, special events and awards banquet onto the CMU campus. Ed and his team have worked diligently to secure the meeting rooms and banquet space our organization needs to accomplish all the tasks of our convention in style and comfort. Thanks, also, to Tournament Director Scott Jensen who has revised the schedule to make it more convenient for you to attend these meetings and special events. The schedule packs the day but gives you more time in the evening to return to your rooms and rest up for the next day’s activities. We hope you take advantage of the proximity of rounds and meetings to participate in the “business” part of the Pi Kappa Delta biennial convention. Your tournament invitation, coming soon to the new website (pikappadelta.com), will provide contacts for the lodging sites where we have negotiated special rates for the tournament duration. Please make your reservations early to secure these rates; Mt. Pleasant is a very busy place on weekends and many hotels have higher rates on Friday and Saturday nights. Other items you will want to put on your “to do” calendar include the Pre-conference on Forensics Funding at the National Communication Association conference in San Antonio on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Council member Phil Voight has done a great job of gathering voices of experience and success and providing time for participants to learn from each other how to finance our activity. Our Pi Kappa Delta General Business meeting will be Thursday, Nov. 16 at 3:30 pm in the Convo, Room 213A. Plan to attend to honor your brothers and sisters who have earned special recognition from PKD. Then, hop on the Shuttle to the Hyatt Regency to celebrate at the PKD Open House from 6:00-8:00 pm in the “Presidential Suite”. If you miss the business meeting; call from the lobby and we’ll give you the room number. Look over the NCA program and you’ll find a number of PKD-sponsored panels. I invite you to attend as many as you can. We know that NCA allots meeting time to groups that demonstrate they can generate attendance. Support Past-President Susan Millsap’s planning efforts and catch a healthy dose of our “Pi Kap spirit” in San Antonio. Finally, I want to invite you to look over the “Civic Engagement” project flyer in your fall mailing. If you didn’t participate last year, you can still be recognized at the PKD National Convention for a project your chapter completes this year. Information about reporting your project will be included in the Tournament Invitation, and available online at the Tournament website. Meanwhile, your National Council is pulling hard on the oars to move our honorary forward. Check out the reports in this Key for details. I continue to be awed by the energy of your National Council members. They have demonstrated the strength and resilience to meet with adversity – ranging from hurricanes to banquet halls that are just too small. The future of Pi Kappa Delta is in good hands. President-Elect’s Report Thomas M. Huebner, Ph.D. – Carson-Newman College I hope your year has gotten off to a great start. We are busy working to secure and finalize locations for 2008 and 2009. The National Comprehensive Tournament is returning to St. Louis in 2008 where we expect another great experience from our friends at Webster University. In 2009 the PKD National Tournament and Convention will be in Shreveport, Louisiana as guests of The Louisiana State University at Shreveport. If you never had the opportunity to venture south for a tournament in Shreveport, you are in for a real treat. Please keep us posted with questions or concerns you have about issues related to intercollegiate forensics and, more specifically, the role of Pi Kappa Delta. I hope each of you has an excellent and successful 2006-2007! Immediate Past-President’s Report Susan P. Millsap, Ph.D. – Otterbein College Hopefully, everyone reading this is planning to attend the National Communication Association annual convention in San Antonio, TX – Nov. 16-19, 2006. Please make your plans to attend the Pi Kappa Delta sponsored panels at NCA: Wednesday: - First and foremost, we have been able to secure a pre-conference workshop session for Weds called “Building Forensic Endowments: Fundraising, Friend-Raising, and Development Planning.” We have been able to secure a panel of experts who will help you find ways to ensure the future of your program. Plan on attending! (Check NCA Program for time and meeting place.)
Please remember to attend the Pi Kappa Delta Business meeting at NCA on Thursday, 3:30-4:45 where we will present our annual awards name the top papers. See you in San Antonio! Historian’s Report Michael Bartanen, Ph. D. – Pacific Lutheran University Nominations for the newly established Order of Attainment are still being accepted. You may find the criteria for the award on the PKD Web Page. The award is designed to honor individuals who are PKD members and who have made a difference in local, national or international communities. The nomination should provide any appropriate evidence of their success and should address the role that their PKD membership and forensics participation contributed to that success. Nomination packets should be sent to the Historian. For further information contact Michael Bartanen, Department of Communication and Theatre, Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, WA, 98447. 253-535-7130, bartanmd@plu.edu. Respectfully submitted, Michael Bartanen Professional Development Report Phillip A. Voight, Ph. D. – Gustavus Adolphus College 2007 Professional Development Conference: Papers and panel proposals are being solicited for the 2007 PKD Professional Development Conference. Educators, students, coaches and alumni are all invited to apply. The conference will be held in conjunction with the 2007 Convention and Tournament and conference proceedings will be published. Papers and panels addressing the Convention and Tournament theme: “Civic Engagement -- the Heart of Democracy” are particularly welcomed. In addition to paper and panel proposals, members are invited to submit letters of interest to participate in two roundtable discussions. The first will focus on chapter-level fundraising and program development. Members who have successfully conducted endowment or fundraising campaigns are encouraged to share their knowledge and to submit “how-to” items to be included in a packet that can be distributed to individual chapters. Sample topics that will be considered include: developing a campaign plan; working with development professionals; coordinating fundraising and friend-raising activities; and finally, developing an alumni relations and communication plan. The second proposed roundtable discussion will focus on tenure and recruitment for forensics educators. The “Quail’s Roost” tenure and promotion guidelines for forensics educators will be the starting point of a discussion of what sorts of information PKD can produce and distribute to assist forensics professionals who are undergoing the tenure process. The roundtable will consider ways that PKD can assist outside audiences in understanding coaching workloads, and it will explore institutional mentoring techniques for forensics educators. PKD Development Plan and Fundraising Activities: The National Council discussed organizational fundraising activities and approved a tentative development plan that included corporate sponsorship, an endowment campaign and gift planning. A tentative corporate sponsor has been selected for the 2007 convention. The plan raises some important philosophical questions, and as it moves toward full implementation, the Council will solicit input from members regarding the next steps that should be taken. For example, Pi Kappa Delta will need to consider and develop donor and corporate sponsor recognition policies, determine and articulate the purpose of an endowment campaign, and explore the possibility of a National Council position solely devoted to fundraising. An initial $100,000.00 estate pledge has been received, and copies of a PKD letter of intent for a future estate gift are available from Phillip Voight. Please contact at: pvoight@gac.edu Charter and Standards Report Amy Veuleman – McNeese State University I hope this report finds everyone well. We are off to an amazing year that promises to be filled with excitement as we plan for the upcoming convention at CMU! I am currently focused on recruiting new schools to PKD as well as encouraging inactive schools to get caught up on their dues so that they may join us for all the excitement in Michigan. I am coordinating with Lisa Vossekuil in the National Office so that we are aware of which programs need to be contacted. I have also received information from two schools that wish to obtain charters. Currently, I am also focused on the continuing development and upgrade of our webpage to increase our visibility to potential programs as well as current members. PLEASE visit our newly renovated and updated website: www.pikappadelta.com If you know of any school that is interested in either becoming a member or reactivating their membership, please contact me! Best of luck on a great season this year! See you all at CMU! Province Coordinator’s Report Gina Jensen – Webster University Greetings from the Province Coordinator! I hope that everyone had a chance to relax and enjoy a little bit of their summer. I also hope that everyone is preparing for a wonderful tournament and convention in Michigan! I know that Ed Hinck and his students are busily preparing for our arrival. When the national council made its site visit this summer, we were welcomed by a beautiful campus, a lovely surrounding area, and a lot of excitement on the part of the Ed and the CMU gang. It’s hard to believe that two years have already gone by and we will once again be enjoying the PKD camaraderie and competition that we all love. I really feel like I have had a chance to get to know a lot of you better over the course of the last two years. It has been fulfilling to be on the National Council of such a great organization. As many of you know, I initiated the “Outstanding Provincial Recognition Award” last year. In order to share the news with as many people as possible, I decided to announce the award recipients in the subsequent semester at a PKD event. With this in mind, I will announce last semester’s recipients during the PKD General Business Meeting at NCA in November. Have a great semester and I hope to see all of you in November and especially in March! Student Representative Report Andrea Carlile – Gustavus Adolphus College Welcome back to another school year that is sure to be full Pi Kappa Delta fun and excitement as we approach our Tournament and Convention in March at Central Michigan University. This year PKD is again heading the national service project of Dress for Success. Information regarding the project is in the PKD fall mailing so be on the look out. Also I am looking forward to working with Student Lieutenant Governors on input for the Student Caucus at the March Convention. If there is new information regarding your province officers, especially Student Lieutenant Governors please be sure to pass that information along to the National Council. I hope your school year is off to a great start. Tournament Director’s Report Scott Jensen – Webster University Tournament Plans are Well Underway Plans are nearly complete for the 2007 national tournament and convention. I am honored to have been asked to serve as this year’s tournament director, and pledge a tournament that is efficient, professional, and consistent with the traditions and expectations of our honorary. Central Michigan University will be a superb site for the tournament. Our summer site visit reveals more than enough rooms in buildings adjacent to one another. The university center is large and fully equipped with lounge and eating spaces, meeting rooms, and other important services. An unique feature of this year’s event is that all tournament and convention activities will be at the university. This will allow us to experiment with a different schedule that threads convention activities within the tournament framework, as opposed to scheduling the tournament, then driving time for teams to eat and return to the hotel for a new round of convention events that evening. Again—the university center will be a perfect site for all of these activities. The full slate of AFA individual events will be offered. Additionally, we will once again offer radio broadcasting and the “To Honor” event, with this year’s focus being Native Americans. Look for oral history, discussion, and alumni events as additional offerings. Another change this year is non- concurrent scheduling of debate events. NPDA and IPDA debate will be scheduled in one time block, with LD and Legislative debate scheduled together in a separate time block. Team policy debate will be scheduled concurrent with each of these two time blocks. This will allow students more debate crossover, as well as crossover into Reader’s Theatre. The tournament staff is a blend of professionals who will work to insure a smoothly run tournament. Thanks to the chairs within the committee; Robert Markstrom (McNeese State University), Jeff Stoppenhagen (Boise State University), Glenda Treadaway (Appalachian State University), and Dan West (Ohio University) will head the various factions of the tournament administration process. The full committee will be announced at NCA. Look for the full invitation on the PKD website soon. We encourage you to make your travel and lodging arrangements soon in order to secure space and to help us in our planning. Please contact me with any questions regarding the tournament. My email is jensensc@webster.edu. I, along with your national council, look forward to seeing you in Mt. Pleasant this March! Editor’s Report Nina-Jo Moore, Ph. D. – Appalachian State University As we begin this Fall, it is my hope that many of you have articles swirling around in those finger tips and brains of yours; THE FORENSIC is certainly interested in them if you do! Since our last KEY, we have published the Winter 2006 issue of THE FORENSIC, and we have just gone to press with the Summer 2006 issue. Due to some programming glitches, we were a little late with the Winter issue, but the Summer issue is right back on schedule. It will be arriving soon, along with your dues statements and other announcements. If you are working on a project that you think might be suitable for publication, PLEASE submit it to me. Remember that I am now accepting them electronically, but please follow the requirements of separating your title page with your personal information on it (so I can send it out for blind review). Also, PLEASE do not do any special formatting – that is one of the main reasons it took me so long to get the Winter 2006 issue ready for printing. Tables and graphs, of course, need their formatting – but please – nothing else. Submit articles to: moorenj@appstate.edu Our next KEY will be published in February – so we get one out before the biennial tournament/convention. Watch the website for the posting of it! Nomination Committee Report Nina-Jo Moore, Ph.D. - Appalachian State University It is that time of our two year cycle that we begin to call for nominations to the Pi Kappa Delta National Council, as well as putting forward the names of the National Council members who plan to run for the position of President-Elect. President-Elect All three members of the National Council who were elected in St. Louis are eligible to run for Pi Kappa Delta President-Elect, and all three have chosen to run (in alphabetical order): Gina Jensen – Webster University; Amy Veuleman – McNeese State University; and Phillip Voight – Gustavus Adolphus College. Their “platform statements” are included in this key, and I hope you will take the time to read them and to contact these candidates should you have questions they might answer for you. National Council Members In addition to that aforementioned election, you will also be electing members to the National Council. Since only one of the candidates for President-Elect can be elected, the two that are not elected are then eligible to run for National Council again. In addition, we are seeking other nominees for National Council. Nomination Process Please send letters of nomination to the National Council to Nina-Jo Moore, the chair of the Nomination Committee, at: moorenj@appstate.edu Deadline will be February 1, 2007. Presidential Platform Statements (Alphabetical Order) Gina Jensen – Webster University Thanks to you and your support nearly two years ago, I have been fortunate enough to spend two years on the national council. After having spent time working for the organization, I have decided to run for Pi Kappa Delta president. I would once again like to ask for your support in this venture. As a flexible traditionalist, I am committed to service, and to spreading the excellence of our membership. With a background not only in communication, but also in history, I have a real respect for tradition. However, I believe that an organization can not grow and continue to be vital and effective without an ability and willingness to adapt to changing cultures. It is the job of the president to seek maintenance of that balance. Since ours is the oldest of the three forensic honoraries, we have a deep and rich history. We should not easily shed our past entirely, but must look to see what makes up Pi Kappa Delta and hold on to those traditions, while continuing to self-monitor and, when necessary, change for the better. Our honorary has been exemplary in this respect; I will continue to encourage flexibility within the context of rich tradition. I have always been committed to serving our organization. I came to Webster University in the fall of 1997. Since then, I have served three terms as governor of the Heartland and formerly the Missouri, and one term on the national council. I have also helped to host two off-year nationals (now the Comprehensive National Tournament), and was fortunate enough to host all of you on our home campus in 2005. I have also had the pleasure of working in the tab room of multiple national tournaments and being tournament director at the 2001 National Tournament and Convention in Boise. As you can see, I have remained dedicated to serving my colleagues and the chapters of Pi Kappa Delta. I feel that if you believe in an organization, you should work to better it and try to give back to it. No matter what the outcome of this election, I will always actively seek ways to serve our organization. I have grown so much as a person and as an educator because of Pi Kappa Delta; I could never give back enough to equal the positive impact our honorary has had on my life. I also hope, if elected, to be able to help to continue spreading the excellence which exists within our organization. Since we are such a large community, sometimes incredible things happen within our organization that go virtually unnoticed. I would like to find a way to disseminate your ideas and get them out to everyone so that we can all either participate in these great events or replicate them. We have amazing members and phenomenal chapters. I will work to find a way for others within PKD to model this excellence so those qualities become more deeply and widely characteristic of our honorary. The March National Tournament and Convention in Central Michigan is going to be a wonderful event, one which I will plan for and anticipate the whole year. I hope that when we meet again as a large group in Mount Pleasant and share the PKD sprit with one another, you will consider electing me to the office of president-elect. I feel that I will be able to serve you well as a flexible traditionalist; I pledge my service, and my efforts at spreading the excellence within our membership. Amy Veuleman - McNeese State University One year ago in St. Louis, I vowed to be committed to PKD over the next eight years if elected to National Council. That is certainly a vow I wish to keep as your next Pi Kappa Delta President-Elect. Pi Kappa Delta promotes the spirit of competition while fostering friendships that last will last for a lifetime. My first debate coach, Jodee Hobbs, introduced me to Pi Kappa Delta stating what mattered to this organization was more than just winning trophies, it was about friendship and fraternity. Certainly these are values that I wish to continue to promote as they are ones that I have truly experienced. Words can not express the outpouring of friendship that I experienced with Hurricane Rita damaged my house so badly last September. The hurricane’s impact may have damaged my home, but the generosity and love shown to my family by members of Council and this organization, mended my heart as well as my spirit. Friendships like those are the ones that leave you speechless overwhelmed with joy. I know others would love to feel that same “spirit” of compassion and competition when they are brought into the warm embrace of this great organization. I have never been a stranger to, nor shied away from hard work. I tend to look forward to it, accepting it as a challenge! Over the course of the last year I have worked diligently with Amy Meeks and Lisa Vossekeil to promote the spirit of Pi Kappa Delta. As the chair of charter and standards, I felt the need to branch into other venues to appeal to potential new chapters. Amy Meeks had announced she was ready to resign the position of webmaster. I immediately saw this as an opportunity to merge more of PKD’s recruiting and retention plan into action! I see the web as this amazing tool that allows me to really give students a first hand look at the greatness that exists within PKD. I also hope to use the web as a means to facilitate more interaction among provinces. I could certainly see more joint ventures developing from increased communication. The province model will continue to become more successful as we merge our existing traditions with new technologies and means of communication. I have no desire to abandon the traditions of PKD. I hope to strengthen the organization through increased communication among provinces, a more prevalent, updated web presence, and a compassion for life that comes through in every aspect of my performance. I hope to continue the working the next six years with my trademark compassion, optimism, and steadfast determination to get the job done. Phillip Voight - Gustavus Adolphus College My name is Phillip Voight and I am a candidate for National Council Vice-President Elect. Two years ago, I worked with the National Council to pass a comprehensive Development Plan that is designed to guarantee PKD’s long-term financial health. In accordance with that plan, several significant milestones have been achieved – including the receipt of our first six-figure estate pledge, the recruitment of our first National Convention corporate sponsor, and the organization of an NCA pre-conference on fundraising and gift planning. Ultimately, raising an endowment would provide us with the ability to substantially reduce or even eliminate many of the costs associated with the National Convention. It could also fund service-related activities, professional development opportunities, outreach programs for new chapters, scholarships, and a myriad of other things that we can now only dream of. To that end, I ask you to read my report in the Fall 2006 KEY (see above), and contact me for the “PKD Letter of Intent for a Future Estate Gift,” and to attend our workshop at NCA in San Antonio. Our success in these efforts is vital to the future of Pi Kappa Delta and, if elected, it would be my top priority. In addition, I will continue to highlight the scholarly and professional accomplishments of students and coaches and to articulate normative forensics coaching and administrative practices in a context that can assist our tenure-track colleagues who are undergoing external review. I will also seek to revive our Professional Development Conference, and to broaden the opportunities for us to recognize outstanding undergraduate research. In short, I am truly humbled by the opportunity to be of service to Pi Kappa Delta and I hope that you will support my candidacy. |
