| THE KEY SPRING 2005 Note From the Editor: We are hoping to get a “leg up” on this process this year, so we are publishing our newsletter now and we will bring copies to the National Tournament and Convention with us. Hopefully you will take note of what is going on with your National Council and come to the meetings prepared to ask questions, vote, and of course, with your “Answer to the Roll”!! I am very excited by the planning that is taking place and by the advance hotel reservations. We should have an excellent time with great friends and colleagues celebrating “the art of persuasion beautiful and just.” While plans for this event are nearly complete it also gives me pause to realize that my time as President is almost complete. The past two years have flown by. I have worked hard to decrease the barriers to entry into Pi Kappa Delta. Our membership keeps growing and I have tried to keep in contact with the membership to meet their needs. We hosted a very successful honoraries national tournament that is well on its way to being a biennial tradition. We have strengthened our relationship with Ripon College and the placement of our Hall of Fame, and financially we are sound. The organization has a great future to look forward to. I want to take this time to thank a great national council for all their efforts in the continued development of Pi Kappa Delta. While we have completed many accomplishments, there are still goals to be reached. I wish the next President and the future National Council much luck. This is a great organization to work for. But, as always, the future of the organization is dependent on you, the membership. Continue to participate in Pi Kappa Delta events, continue to honor your students with membership in this outstanding honorary, continue to pay your dues, and continue to practice the art of persuasion, beautiful and just. See you in St. Louis! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FIRST AND FOREMOST: VISIT THE TOURNAMENT/CONVENTION WEBSITE: http://www.webster.edu/pkd/ * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PRESIDENT-ELECT’S REPORT Dr. Sandy Alspach Pi Kappa Delta President-Elect We’re beginning to plan for the 2006 National Honorary tournament scheduled for March 10-12 in Gatlinburg, TN. Tom Huebner is the tournament site host and promises us an excellent location with all the amenities for a great tournament and lots of opportunity for some PKD networking. With your support at Convention in St. Louis, we will kick into high gear for the March 2007 National Convention and Tournament at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, MI, hosted by Ed Hinck and his CMU team, with support from the Ferris State folk less than an hour west, the newly chartered Northwood U. team less than an hour east and the Hillsdale team a bit farther south. Michigan PKD welcomes you to the heart of the Great Lakes. The steering committee for the 2013 Centennial met in Chicago during the NCA conference to begin laying the foundation for a wonderful celebration of 100 years of forensic “fraternity.” While we’ve become more inclusive and changed that term to “honorary,” the spirit of unity embodied by the old concept of “brotherhood” is still a hallmark of PKD. You’ll feel the difference in the campus hallways at Webster University and at the Sheraton Westport – there’s just something wonderfully different about a PKD national tournament. If you would like to participate in any way with the Centennial, contact any of the steering committee members: Sandy Alspach, chair; Michael Bartanen, R. David Ray, Gary Horn or Tony Allison. We are eagerly anticipating the Campaign proposals that you enter into competition at Webster U. While this new experimental event provides a wonderful opportunity for communication students to hone their skills, it has a very pragmatic purpose as well. We will be building our PKD sponsorship campaign on the proposals submitted at this 2005 tournament. Your ideas could become reality – and secure the financial future of PKD for future students. If you haven’ t considered entering the Campaign event, please give it another look. In conjunction with the National Tournament, we will be holding our biennial developmental conference on the afternoon of the tournament registration day, Wednesday, March 16, at the convention center in the tournament hotel. For more information about the hotel, check the tournament link found on the PKD homepage http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/PiKappaDeltaNational/ The theme of the 2005 conference is "Scripting the Future." For more than 90 years, Pi Kappa Delta has been a leader among forensics organizations in determining the direction of forensics education. This year's developmental conference examines past foundations, current practices and future challenges in competitive forensics. All papers and panels welcome. Panels will be accepted through March 8th and should include a title, name of panel participants with school affiliation and contact information, and an abstract describing the panel content. Please describe the submission as a "paper" or "discussion" panel. All inquiries and submissions should be directed to Shannon Dyer, Chair, Pi Kappa Delta Professional Development Committee, sdyer@sbuniv.edu or 417-328-1695. We encourage you to stay in touch with institutions that are wavering in their membership. Encourage them to participate in PKD and attend our National Tournament and Convention. In addition, please send your individual memberships to the national office as soon as possible. These are important to your participation at the tournament, and especially earning sweepstakes points. I look forward to a fun, enjoyable experience in Sta. Louis, as I am sure you do, too! Submissions: All papers and panels must be submitted on-line via All Academic. Deadline: February 16, 2005. Pi Kappa Delta is accepting papers, programs, and performance submissions for the 2005 NCA convention. While all submissions pertaining to forensics in its broadest sense are welcome, individuals are encouraged to consider the convention theme, "The Health of the Discipline" and focus on integrating this theme within their submissions. Discussion panels are encouraged. These panels permit the persons who are interested to read the papers in advance. The time set aside for the program can then be used for discussion of the papers already read. Submissions that reach within the discipline to colleagues in other divisions, sections, commissions, caucuses, and affiliate organizations are encouraged. Special consideration will be given to the proposals that reach the furthest. Completed papers will be considered for inclusion on a competitive papers panel from which a top paper will be selected and recognized at the General Business Meeting of Pi Kappa Delta. Student and debut papers are also encouraged. At the time of submission please make any audio/visual or other special needs known. Tina and I are working hard to make this year the best possible experience for all of the students. One way that I am working is to make sure that the caucus is a success, and the only way it can be that way is if everyone gives there input. Within the next couple of weeks, I will be contacting all of the various student representatives from the various schools looking for the hot topics that are out there. Let me know what is important to you. If you think that your school may not be included in this mass mailing, please let me know whatever you think is important. Please submit all ideas, topics, or comments to me as soon as possible at tanbarbiedoll@aol.com. I am looking forward to seeing all of you in St. Louis. And I hope that your competition season and academic season is going well. Let’s all meet in St. Louis! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FIRST AND FOREMOST: VISIT THE TOURNAMENT/CONVENTION WEBSITE: http://www.webster.edu/pkd/ * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * EDITOR’S REPORT Dr. Nina-Jo Moore Pi Kappa Delta Editor of THE FORENSIC and the KEY The life of an Editor never seems to be a dull one. If you are not out seeking articles for the journal, then it is articles for the newsletter you are beating the bushes for. Such has been my life for the past few months. But you will be pleased to know that we are now almost 100% caught up on the FORENSIC- we should be out with the next issue either right around the time we go to the National Tournament and Convention, or shortly before it. I have decided to go ahead with the publishing of the Undergraduate Scholars’ Panel – with the Top 3 Papers from that event that was held at the NCA convention last November – in Chicago, IL. My purpose is two-fold. First, I want to showcase these fine works of our undergraduate students, and show that our students are budding scholars and that their works are worthy of recognition by other scholars in our field. I must admit to an ulterior motive, however: I want our membership to see how important this event is for our organization and hope that you will encourage all our undergraduates to participate in the upcoming NCA Undergraduate Honors Panel, which will be held in Boston, Mass in November. Watch for announcements (especially in the KEY produced at the National Tournament & Convention) for specific details. Now I do have one other small item to remind you of. Please remember that we are coming up on the National Tournament and Convention, where we publish a daily issue of the KEY. We hope to humorous, entertaining, etc…but I cannot do that without your help. So come with lots of ideas!! If you would like to e-mail me some ideas already (such as for contests, etc…) please send them to: moorenj@appstate.edu I would so like to have a few things “up my sleeve” already! I look forward to seeing all of you in St. Louis! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NOMINATING COMMITTEE REPORT Dr. Nina-Jo Moore, Chair Pi Kappa Delta Nominating Committee The time has arrived, the deadline passed, and if you have been watching you know we had numerous “calls” for nominations for the nominations to the National Council. You can find the “Statements” of those nominated to the National Council on a separate place on the PKD website. Please go to the main webpage and click on Nominations for the elections for the National Council, or CLICK HERE to take you to that portion of the website. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FIRST AND FOREMOST: VISIT THE TOURNAMENT/CONVENTION WEBSITE: http://www.webster.edu/pkd/ * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * |
