| THE KEY FALL 2004 President’s Column Susan Millsap, President Otterbein College This is a Nationals year! Are you ready? I am very excited about the National Convention/Tournament being planned for March 16-19 in St. Louis. Scott and Gina Jensen are hard at work planning and preparing their campus, Webster University, for the best PKD tournament experience ever. Shannon Dyer is busy working on the development of an outstanding Developmental Conference as part of the Convention. Please be looking for the call for papers and panels! This summer we had a busy council meeting in St. Louis where we stayed at our tournament hotel and toured the Webster campus. All parties are prepared to meet our needs. The facilities are excellent. And the walking distances are short. But are you ready? Students must be official members of Pi Kappa Delta in order to compete and count towards sweepstakes points. So I strongly encourage every chapter to make sure that all student memberships are up to date and to initiate new members by the end of Autumn term. We don’t want anyone to miss out on this year’s tournament. Along with preparing for the convention/tournament, the National Council also addressed other issues pertinent to the organization. You noticed in your dues mailing that there is a ballot for a constitutional change on the election process. The intention of the Constitutional change is to eliminate one step in the election process so as to shorten the business meetings at nationals without harming the democratic process. But you must vote in order for this to happen. So please vote and return your ballot! Also at summer council, we approved an official procedure for the nomination and awarding of the standing PKD awards. Thanks to Glenda Treadaway’s work, we now have this procedure published and added to our By-Laws. Hopefully this will make this process easier in the future. The council has also begun discussion on the celebration plans for our centennial celebration in 2013. Time goes by quickly and we are working to make this memorable. More details and other news will be presented at the Pi Kappa Delta Business meeting at NCA in Chicago which is on Friday, Nov.12 at 12:30. As you read the other reports in this KEY you will see that our organization is financially healthy, chapters are busy, and our membership keeps growing. We are planning for a bright future that will be possible with your support. So keep the spirit of Pi Kappa Delta alive and “the art of persuasion beautiful and just” working in our lives. See you in March! President-Elect’s Report Sandy Alspach, President-Elect Ferris State University Coming Events National Council has received a bid from The River Terrace in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to be the site of the 2006 National Honoraries’ Tournament. Thanks to Tom Huebner for working with the folks in Gatlinburg to offer us excellent room rates for a long weekend, March 9-12, 2006. Details will be forthcoming. Look forward to an excellent example of “the Art of Persuasion” at the 2005 national Convention in St. Louis when the Central Michigan University chapter invites us all to convene and compete in beautiful Mt. Pleasant, Michigan in March 2007. Your vote at Convention “seals the deal.” In planning for the long term, National Council has discussed moving the National Honoraries Tournament to the first weekend in March in even years, beginning in 2008, at the Sheraton Westport Chalet site (St. Louis) – the same hotel you will enjoy for this year’s national Convention events. Speaking for the proposition, I would offer these arguments: having a regular weekend date makes season planning easier; having an excellent location in the middle of the county makes traveling easier; and having local people skilled in the art of tournament management and familiar with the site (and willing to manage! – thank you, Jensens) makes for confidence in a well-run tournament. We welcome your thoughts on this plan. Endowment Committee (Foundation) The “chapter challenge” begins! Plan a fund-raising event and contribute to the Pi Kappa Delta Foundation before March 1, 2005 and your chapter will be recognized at the 2005 Convention. No contribution is too small. All contributions go to supporting the mission of Pi Kappa Delta: to recognize tomorrow’s leaders for their participation in activities which develop their communication skills. We continue to seek sponsorship for our national tournaments. If you have a “friend of forensics” who might be interested in underwriting any part of the expense of our national tournament, please direct him or her to any member of the Endowment Committee: Sandy Alspach (Ferris State), chair; Gary Horn (Ferris State) and Tony Allison (Cameron). Support can be in the form of a direct contribution to the Pi Kappa Delta Foundation or an “in kind” gift. For example, a sponsor might choose to provide the awards for the tournament, or to underwrite the banquet expenses. Sponsors should know that their gift will reduce the cost of participating in the tournament to all chapters. Our goal is to make the Pi Kappa Delta national tournament as inexpensive as possible, so that more of our members can enjoy the “Pi Kap Nationals difference”. Celebrating a Century of PKD A committee is being formed to plan appropriate activities to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of our founding. The official celebration will begin at the 2013 national convention. If you would like to be a part of this planning process, contact Sandy Alspach (Ferris State). In anticipation of the centennial events, we are working to establish contact with our alumni. We invite all chapters, especially alumni chapters, to help us update mailing lists by sending names and addresses of Pi Kappa Delta alumni to our secretary at the national office in Ripon, Joyce Kreuger. Secretary-Treasurer’s Update Bill Hill, PKD Secretary-Treasurer University of North Carolina - Charlotte Pi Kappa Delta is in solid financial condition. Total net worth of the organization increased from $64,116.10 at the end of the 2002-03 year (Summer 2003) to $73,635.02 at the end of the 2003-04 year (Summer 2004). During the past year, 111 chapters paid their annual dues and 253 new members joined the organization. The National Honorary tournament generated approximately $4,800 in revenue and continues to be important to the ongoing financial stability of the organization. As an organization, we have worked hard over the past three years to find and implement ways to increase the financial efficiency of Pi Kappa Delta. We will continue those efforts and welcome suggestions from any member about ways to make our operation more efficient, as well as customer-friendly. The organization—a major factor over the past three years in improving PKD’s financial foundation. We have produced a PKD magnet that includes important organizational contact information. While we do not have an unlimited amount of magnets, we can make them available to any chapter or province engaged in PKD public relations activities. To request a supply, contact Joyce at the National Office. Charter and Standards and Institutional Research Tom Huebner Carson Newman College The BIG news: We are about to launch the Pi Kappa Delta Perception Survey. In a few short weeks you will have the opportunity to share your opinions regarding the past, present, and future of PKD. In an effort to determine "what people think of us," we have developed a survey that, we hope, will help us decide what our organization needs to look like as we prepare for a new century of excellence. The survey will be conducted via e-mail. If you do not receive e-mail or would like to complete a hard copy, please contact me at (865) 471-3225 or by e-mail at thuebner@cn. edu . The BIGGER news: Our national office is trying to make sure our membership records are up to date. If you are aware of a program that is now "out of commission," please let us know. More importantly, please encourage your forensics friends to consider joining Pi Kappa Delta. The future depends on new programs joining and old programs staying. If you have questions about Charter and Standards or Institutional Research, I want to hear from you. Professional Development Committee: Shannon Dyer Southwest Baptist University Current Leaders and Future Leaders Display Scholarship The 2005 Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament will be an opportunity for the membership to meet and compete, but it is also a time to celebrate the scholarship of our honorary. The biennial Pi Kappa Delta developmental conference will be held on the first day of the National Tournament Wednesday, March 16th in the early afternoon. The theme for the pre-conference will be “Scripting the Future.” Two of the concurrent panel programs will be “Budget Building: Strengthening the Foundations of Forensics Activities” and “PKD in Perspective: Viewing the Future through the Past.” Contact Shannon Dyer, sdyer@sbuniv.edu or (417) 328-1695 by February 1st if you are interested in submitting an additional panel for the conference session. Additional pre-conference information will be available on the PKD National Tournament website. Province Coordinator Report Helen Karchner Ursinus College, PA We have a strong need to get each individual alumni chapter that exists today listed on-line. Lists have been received from some chapters, but so far, all have been from Province of the Greater Northeast. Please help us by getting lists from all provinces. It is my belief that Alumni should be recognized and shown our thanks; if we want more support from them, then we must recognize their contributions. When we have more alumni in our “data base,” we will determine some forms of recognition for their contributions. We have established an informative link on our PKD national website to help other chapters establish an alumni chapter - our thanks to Amy Meeks for this! Our PKD Travel Agent is now official: Brenda Wilhyde Lahey of Flamingo Travel has been asked to serve in this role. Please keep your eyes open for an entire press release with contact information, & website information. We hope to have a website link on our PKD National website for specific collection of travel needs. There are few points we need to make about this service: a. Keep in mind that all travel agents are restricted/prohibited from earning any “commission” on the sale of airline tickets. Therefore, the only way they earn any profit is through a service fee that must first cover their basic overhead costs of processing, ticketing, postage, shipping & handling charges and generally ranges from $25 - $100 per ticket with most online or freestanding agencies. Flamingo Travel’s charge is only $30 per ticket b. Specifically for PKD…. 1. $ 5 will be donated back to PKD’s National Treasury on every individual airline ticket purchased. 2. Moreover, if any PKD member books a personal travel package, the PKD National Treasury benefits: 1. $25 will be donated per every 7-night stay package 2. $50 will be donated per every honeymoon package 3. A group is considered 10 individuals or more departing from the same location and arriving into the same destination. $5 will be donated back into our PKD treasury from each individual’s airline ticket within group packages too. PKD has already earned a little on this and we are hoping that it will help benefit our organization. With the last issue (Spring 2004) of THE KEY, I created a questionnaire about Province restructuring and its effectiveness. Unfortunately, only one response was received. Since we have another survey coming up, through the Institutional Research Committee (see Tom Huebner’s article above), we will wait until that survey process is complete before attempting to survey our folks again. I have been surveying the idea of the possibility of the need to restructure some of our Provinces, and more news on that will be forthcoming. If you have some ideas about this, please let me know. I look forward to working with all of you more in the coming year! STUDENTS REPORT Tina Wheeler, Webster University Tomeka Robinson, McNeese State University The report is in…everyone is going to have a slammin’ time at The 2005 National Pi Kappa Delta Tournament and Convention. But there’s more. As your student rep, I’ve got some ideas cooking. I don’t want to give everything away just yet, but come prepared to kick off your dress shoes and have some fun! Also, be thinking of some ideas for the Student Caucus. Can’t wait to see you in March!!! EDITOR’S REPORT Nina-Jo Moore, Editor of THE FORENSIC & THE KEY Appalachian State University It’s that time of the year when things get rolling again – tournaments begin, studying begins, and yes, it’s time to start thinking about that wonderful National Tournament & Convention!!! This also means it’s time to start thinking about the “Fun Key” – the ones we produce at the Convention!! Since I do not have a sense of humor at all, I will rely on your help to make the Tournament/Convention Key the fun publication it can be!!! So start thinking now of challenges, contests, jokes (publicly acceptable ones!), stories, and things of the like! The more your bring – the more I can publish!!! As for THE FORENSIC, we are almost “caught up” from when we unfortunately got behind last year. You should be receiving the Summer 2004 issue within the next few weeks. I am in need of more articles for THE FORENSIC. If you have a paper your have presented at a convention that you think might make a good submission, please send it. If you have a teaching idea for teaching students to think critically, please send it. If you have used a good textbook in your classes and you would like to review it, please send it!!! Any and all submissions are gladly accepted. Please send them to: Nina-Jo Moore College of Fine & Applied Arts Appalachian State University Boone, NC 28608 I look forward to seeing some of you in Chicago at NCA, and the rest of you in St. Louis at the National Tournament and Convention!!! NOMINATIONS ARE NOW OPENED Nina-Jo Moore, Chair of the Nominating Committee Appalachian State University Pi Kappa Delta is calling for the nominations for National Council, to be elected at our National Tournament and Convention in March. The nominations are called for to meet this standard of our Constitution: The elective officers of the National Organization of Pi Kappa Delta shall be a President-Elect and five National Council members. Of the five National Council members, two shall be student representatives. The Student Representatives shall hold office only while members in good standing of an undergraduate Chapter of Pi Kappa Delta. The remaining three National council members shall be of the Orders of Instruction or Active Alumni. This is the process to be followed : The elective officers of the Order of Instruction or Active Alumni other than the President-Elect, and one student National Council member shall be chosen at a later meeting of the National Convention in the following manner: for elective officers of the Order of Instruction or Active Alumni the Nominating Committee shall submit as candidates the names of five or more persons, at least three of whom have not previously served on the National Council. Other nominations may be made from the floor. If only five persons are nominated, each Chapter shall vote on a preferential ballot for the five candidates. The three candidates with the highest ranking shall be deemed elected to the National Council. If more than five persons are nominated, each Chapter shall vote for five members in preferential order, ranking all others sixth, and a second vote shall be held among the five highest ranking candidates, the voting on a preferential ballot to determine the selections for the Council from among the tied candidates. For the student National Council member, the Nominating Committee shall submit as candidates the names of three or more persons. Other nominations may be made from the floor. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected. Officers shall assume their duties on the first day of June following their election, and shall serve for two years or until their successors are elected. (The other student representative is appointed by the host community for the following National Convention and Tournament.) In short, what we need are nominations for the positions to be filled on the National Council by members of the Order of Instruction or Active Alumni, and one Student Representative. If you have names of people you would like to nominate, please send that nomination to: Nina-Jo Moore College of Fine & Applied Arts Appalachian State University Boone, NC 28608 Deadline: January 31, 2005 |
