THE KEY FALL 2003

Editor's Note: As we begin our new era of "on-line" newsletters, we will be changing some of our formatting.  Since the
webpage design does not lend itself easily to columns, we will present articles in their entirety as one section of the
newsletter, separated by some form of divider between each article.  The Roster of the National Council will now be
found at the end of the newsletter (or access the National Council through their PKD webpage links).              Thanks!

Presidential Address

Dr. Susan P. Millsap

*Editor's Note: The following is the Presidential Address of the new PKD President, written to be presented at the
Banquet at the 2003 Biennial Tournament & Convention in Baltimore, MD.  Dr. Millsap, in the interest of time in an
already overly-long banquet, made a decision not to present the speech at the banquet, but to put it in writing and
present it through this issue of THE KEY.

Six years ago I was elected to the National Council of Pi Kappa Delta.  In that time, under the leadership of Joel
Hefling, Scott Jensen, and Glenda Treadaway, we have seen changes in our organization.  We held a Constitutional
Convention, making changes that better reflect the needs of our membership.  We passed a sexual harassment policy
to better protect the needs of our membership, and we have reached out to other organizations and communication
activities to strengthen our membership.

My role on the National Council for the first four years was chair of the Charter and Standards Committee.  As
chair I spent a great deal of time recruiting new chapters at every tournament I attended.  In doing so I was able to
respond to the questions about our organization and the issues of concern by our own membership.  With this insight we
were able to make membership into Pi Kappa Delta more accessible to our different audiences.  I also gained a greater
appreciation of how Pi Kappa Delta will only be as strong as its membership.  And we are strong.  I have seen and heard
great dedication to the values of our organization.  That communication activities are a valuable educational tool that
need to be supported and endorsed.  That the art of ethical persuasion is essential to the survival of our world.

With these thoughts in mind I take on the role of President of Pi Kappa Delta.  I pledge my dedication and hard
work to continue to build and strengthen the membership of Pi Kappa Delta.  We need to continue to reach out - to be
inclusive – of other forensic organizations and other communication activities.  We need to be a leader in the recognition
and support of ethical communication and in the education of the proper use of persuasion in our world.

In order to achieve these goals I am going to ask the new National Council to 1) re-examine the barriers to
membership into Pi Kappa Delta to insure that Pi Kappa Delta is accessible without losing the standards of our
honorary; 2) to increase ways to include all levels of our membership in Pi Kappa Delta activities and functions so that
all may benefit from our network of support; 3) to increase recognition of our honorary to all communication related
activities; and 4) to acknowledge leaders in the education and practice of ethical communication.

I am very excited about the next two years as President of Pi Kappa Delta.  I ask for your help as well in
strengthening Pi Kappa Delta.  Use the communication skills we are all trained to use well by talking about Pi Kappa
Delta to others.  Invite other schools to join as well as increase the membership on your own campus.  Reach out to
others.  Only through working together will we continue to be strong.

We live in an uncertain world.  In many ways we seem to forget the lessons of our past.  If there is an organization
uniquely capable of preparing our future decision-makers, it is Pi Kappa Delta.  And I will do all I can to be sure that Pi
Kappa Delta continues to grow and lead our membership confidently into the future.  Thank you.

President's Column
Dr. Susan Millsap, President

Welcome back to another academic year.  Let me update you on council actions this summer.  At the end of June your
new National Council met at our PKD National Office in Ripon, WI.  We visited the Hall of Fame and saw the addition of
the new inductees to the display.  We also met with the new President of Ripon College, educating him on who we are
and the significance of Ripon College to Pi Kappa Delta history.

With five new council members, we had a very productive and creative meeting planning the next two years and
generating ideas to help Pi Kappa Delta develop and grow.  As always, I believe that the strength of the organization lies
in its membership.  We need to continue to bond together with our current members and reach out to new members.
With the hope of clarifying the boundaries of our organization, in an attempt to better understand our mission, the
Council generated the following statements about who we are and why people should join Pi Kappa Delta:

1.       As an honorary organization we recognize excellence for all students at all

levels, not just those that win trophies at tournaments.

2.       As the oldest existing forensic honorary, membership connects you to a

tradition of support for the spoken word.

3.       PKD offers the opportunity for a lifelong membership to an organization

comprised of individuals striving for and exemplifying dedication, honor,

strength of character and high ethical standards.

4.       PKD is based on the ideas that tradition, camaraderie, and excellence go hand

in hand thus creating a collegial atmosphere that fosters learning and growth.

5.       PKD offers support and encouragement for development and advancement in

educational, professional and community service activities.

I would like to issue a challenge to all chapters this year to make an effort to strengthen the bonds of your
chapter’s membership.  Spend time together at work and at leisure activities.  Help to form the Pi Kap identity on your
campus.  I also challenge you to reach out to others and encourage them to join in the benefits of Pi Kappa Delta.
Anyone involved in communication activities is welcome to apply for membership.  Only through a strong membership
can we continue to be a strong organization.

Another way of supporting Pi Kappa Delta is to attend Pi Kappa Delta tournaments, activities, and meetings.  If
you will be attending the National Communication Association (NCA) national convention in Miami this Fall, I encourage
you to attend the Pi Kappa Delta General Business Meeting on Saturday.  I also strongly encourage you to attend the
honoraries' national tournament that we will be sponsoring this year at Middle Tennessee State University on January
23-25.  We will be offering Debate (Policy, Parli, LD), Individual Events and Readers Theatre.  The comprehensive
nature of the tournament makes this not only educational but economical for teams traveling.  The invitation should be
available on the major forensic list-serves, including the PKD list serve.

Encourage people to visit the PKD website for more information at http://www.uamont.
edu/Organizations/PiKappaDeltaNational/. I hope everyone has a productive and safe academic year, and I hope to see
many of you at tournaments or other activities over the year.  If you ever wish to contact me directly, please feel free to
e-mail me at smillsap@otterbein.edu.  Have a great year!

          Susan Millsap, PKD President, 2003-2005

National Secretary/Treasurer's Column

PKD Financial Update

Dr. Bill Hill

Pi Kappa Delta considerably improved its financial position during the last biennium.  Our total net worth
($64,116.10) and cash on hand ($38,461.14) increased compared with the previous two year time period. Our position
improved due to a combination of factors.  First, we had a very successful “off-year” tournament in 2002 that provided
needed resources the organization could use to fund the 2003 Convention and Tournament.  Second, we implemented
a number of cost-cutting measures to ensure that the national office functions in a financially efficient manner.  Third, we
had a well-attended Convention and Tournament that exceeded our expectations.  Finally, we implemented a plan to
secure sponsorship funding for that event and generated almost $3,000 in individual/institutional/provincial contributions.

As we move into this biennium, it will continue to be important to monitor the cost effectiveness of our basic
operations and make appropriate modifications.  It is clear that our organization cannot operate for the biennium on the
proceeds generated solely at the National Convention and Tournament.   As a result, we must continue to sponsor a
national tournament every year, and we must be financially successful in the tournaments that we sponsor. We are
indeed fortunate that both the 2004 “off-year” tournament hosted by Middle Tennessee State University and the 2005
tournament hosted by Webster University have the potential to be among our most successful ever.

MINUTES OF SUMMER NATIONAL COUNCIL MEETING

Since we are now publishing The Key on-line, we would ask that you read the minutes of the business
meetings on the same website.  We had a very productive Summer National Council Meeting in Fon du Lac and Ripon,
Wisconsin (as you will see mentioned numerous times within this KEY), and we would ask that you go to the website to
read the minutes.  Many of the issues and topics we dealt with are of major concern to your programs as well as to the
health and well-being of PKD.

Those minutes can be found under the following link on the PKD Homepage:

PKD National Council Meeting Summer 2003 Minutes

President-Elect's Column

Dr. Sandy Alspach

It’s exciting for me to be able to report that one of my primary responsibilities has well-begun.  We have a possible bid
for the 2007 National Convention and Tournament site:  Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, MI.  Ed Hinck is
working with his administration and local host sites to prepare an exciting bid for this PKD event in the heart of the
Midwest.  Mt. Pleasant is located north of Lansing and northwest of Detroit.  Ed and his team have hosted very
successful invitational tournaments for many years and they are eager to share their Michigan hospitality with the PKD
family.

My thanks to Marty Most and Jeff Stoppenhagen who have offered Boise State University as a “back-up” site for
2007, should the bid from Central Michigan not be accepted by the PKD Membership.  We well-remember the wonderful
PKD tournament they hosted in 2001.  It’s a good sign that we Pi Kappers leave a positive impression on administration,
staff and community when a host school offers to host our convention and tournament a second time.

The second half of my charge requires your help.  We are looking for a host site for the 2006 National Honoraries
Tournament.  Since there is no convention associated with this tournament, a host school should consider this event
rather like a large long-weekend tournament.  The specifications for the tournament are available at the PKD website,
now even easier to find, thanks to David Ray and his UA-Monticello staff.

In the past, Pi Kappa Delta has hosted this event the last weekend in January.  This time frame, however, is
somewhat negotiable, taking into consideration the least conflict with existing traditional invitational tournaments.  We
have also tried to locate the tournament in a location easily accessible by a majority of our chapters and below the
“Snow Belt.”  Because this is an event attended by schools in any of the three forensic honorary organizations, the host
school need not be a Pi Kappa Delta member.  If you are interested in hosting this event, or know a DOF at a school in
your region who might be, please contact me.

I have taken interest in another topic as well.  Pi Kappa Delta will soon be celebrating one hundred years of honoring
those who demonstrate the “Art of Persuasion, Beautiful and Just."  It is not too soon to begin plans for an appropriate
recognition of our history and tradition.   I was impressed with the dignity of our Hall of Fame at Ripon College, in the
room where the first intercollegiate debate was held, but I was also aware of the long white wall that holds the pictures of
our Hall of Fame members.  While there is ample room for more honorees, there is also space for additional
recognitions.

I wish to pursue an idea that one project for our centennial would be a project that would not only preserve our history
and demonstrate our pride in our roots, but celebrate our accomplishments and it might also contribute to our financial
foundation.  Please stay tuned for further information and announcements concerning this idea.

I am excited to be working with Susan and a great Council to keep our PKD Convention and Tournament traditions
alive and thriving.

Discovering, Nurturing and Honoring Our “Roots”:

Strengthening the PKD Tree for Our Next Century

Dr. Sandra Alspach, President-Elect

As I promised in my campaign for President-Elect, I am committed to building a firm financial foundation for our PKD
family tree.   I offer this plan of action for the next six years, and call on the entire PKD family to join in the campaign.

Phase One:  Discover Our Roots

Carolyn Keefe has been the guiding force behind the development of PKD Alumni chapters.  Several Alumni chapters
have been chartered; and some, like the West Chester chapter, provide great service to their alma maters, and to PKD
and forensics in general, through volunteering their time as judges, coaching collegiate competitors, and working at
forensic tournaments.  We greatly appreciated the alumni who were vital to the judging pool at the 2003 National
Tournament in Baltimore.

Harold Widvey, past national Secretary-Treasurer, began a database of PKD members in hopes that this resource
could be continued as members became alumni.  We are working with faculty and graduate students in Information
Systems Management at Ferris to recover the data from a box of disks we found, literally, in the basement of our
national office in Ripon, Wisconsin.   This process will produce a database that can help us locate and make contact
with our potential alumni chapter members.

Here’s where you active coaches and members of PKD can help.  If your school does not have an alumni chapter,
work with your school’s Alumni Director to create one.  Then, share your contact list, including as much information as
you are permitted, with me.   Glenda Treadaway and Helen Karchner will work with me to support your efforts and to
provide our alumni with appropriate ways for continuing their PKD relationship.

Phase Two:  Nurture Our Mission

As we all know, costs to host a major national tournament and convention continue to escalate.  Many of us make
hard budgetary decisions and spend time and effort to raise funds to include the national PKD event in our schedule.
We work to give our students the PKD “experience” because we believe it is unique in the forensics community and that
it offers the best opportunity for us to practice the “Art of Persuasion, Beautiful and Just.”

It is time to seek significant financial support for the PKD National Convention and Tournament.  We need to invite
individuals and corporations who share our mission to participate as sponsors for this event.  Sponsorship could range
from a commitment to underwrite one entire National Convention and Tournament, to smaller gifts that could defray
expenses like trophies and awards, printing costs, or the awards banquet.

We believe that our alumni and collegiate chapter network includes potential sponsors, waiting to be asked to
participate in our mission.  All we need to do is to ask them.  If you, or someone you know, is interested in supporting the
PKD mission, please contact me.  We can discuss levels of support and appropriate ways of recognizing our
benefactors.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PAST PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

Dr. Glenda Treadaway

In keeping with what our National President has asked us to do, I have developed a set of goals to accomplish for PKD
for the next two years.

Goals for Next Two Years:

A.     Attempt to increase participation of members in the process of award nominations.

B.     Work with PKD alumni to create greater communication between the alumni and the National Council.

C.     Attempt to secure quality panels and programs for the 2004 and 2005 National Communication Association
Convention.

D.     Attempt to increase the attendance of Past Presidents at the 2005 Biennial National Convention and Tournament.

E.      Work with Susan Millsap and the National Convention/Tournament Committee in planning such events as the Past
Presidents’ Dinner, Induction Ceremony, Voting Booth, and Hall of Fame & Golden Gavel Ceremony at the 2005
Biennial National Convention and Tournament.

F.      Contribute, as much as possible, articles to The Key.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pi Kappa Delta Recognizes Excellence

Dr. Glenda Treadaway, Past President

Pi Kappa Delta presents several annual and biennial awards to recognize outstanding educators, chapters
and students.  Four award recipients have already been selected and these awards will be presented at the 2003 NCA
Convention in Miami on November 19-23.  The E.R. Nichols Award for Excellence in Forensics Teaching, L.E. Norton
Awards for Outstanding Forensics Scholarship, John Shields Award for Outstanding Contributions to PKD, and Bob R.
Derryberry Outstanding Young Educators Award are presented each year at our general business meeting during the
NCA convention.

You should begin thinking about nominees for awards to be presented in 2004-2005.  The same awards listed
above will be presented at the 2004 NCA Convention in Chicago.  In addition, the R. David Ray New Pi Kappa Delta
Chapter Awards and the Carolyn Keefe Outstanding Pi Kappa Delta Alumni Awards will be presented during the 2005
Biennial Convention and Tournament in St. Louis.  Nominees will also be solicited during this spring for inductees into
PKD’s Hall of Fame.  A call for nominations will be placed next fall for PKD All-American Awards as well.  Information on
these and all other PKD Awards is available on our website.  Calls for nominations, along with information about each
award, will also be available through mailings and upcoming issues of THE KEY.  Feel free to contact Past President,
Glenda Treadaway, for more information about these awards:  treadwaygj@appstate.edu or 828-262-2222.

Editor's Note: Dr. Treadaway has recently been promoted to Assistant Chair of the Department of Communication at
Appalachian State University.  Congratulations Glenda!  We all know you'll do a GREAT job!

PROVINCE COORDINATOR REPORT

Helen Pearce Karchner

I am one of your new Pi Kappa Delta National Council Members for 2003-2005! For those who haven’t met me, I have
been a member of PKD for the past 18 years, am currently serving as the President of West Chester University’s PKD
Alumni Chapter and am the Director of Forensics for newly chartered Ursinus College.  First and foremost, thank you
voting delegates for supporting me during the elections held this past spring!

During my campaign for this National Council Member seat, I pledged to “bridge the gap between undergraduates
and alumni, improve communication with alumni chapters, and increase active alumni membership.”  As the Province
Coordinator, I am in a position to do just that. During our National Council meeting this past June, we discussed our
goals, functions, and aspirations for the next two years.  We gleaned information about past endeavors, and then
determined specifically how to integrate all members’ intentions to fortify Pi Kappa Delta’s already strong and active
membership!  As your Province Coordinator, I will:

1)                  Serve as your liason between the National Council and each of the Provinces. If you need any information
or clarification of communiqués, I can help you;

2)                  Assist in strengthening your Province’s structure. Your messages and suggestions will reach the National
Council and come to fruition;

3)                  Coordinate activities within the Provinces for continued growth of PKD.  By keeping students and alumni
involved, informed, and active, only then will the lifetime commitment to PKD be beneficial to all its membership.

My first action was to prepare a report identifying current Province Officers.  They are as follows:

Province of the Heartland

*Jack Rogers of Central Mo. State - Gov.

*Scott Jensen of Webster Univ. - Lt. Gov.

*Tracey Fredrick of Southwestern College - Sec./Treas.

*Chris Michaels of Webster Univ. & Bryan Fisher of Southwest Baptist Univ. - Student Lt. Gov.’s

Province of the Greater North East

*Carl Hyden of Morgan State Univ. - Gov.

*Paul Alday of Bowling Green - Lt. Gov.

*Jody Newcomer of York College - Sec./Treas.

*Dan Li of Ohio State Univ. - Student Lt. Gov.

Province of the Lower Mississippi

*Amy Veuleman of McNeese State Univ. - Gov.

*Robert Markstrom of McNeese State Univ., - Lt. Gov.

*Jeffrey Hobbs of Univ. of Texas at Tyler - Sec./Treas.

*Andrea Burton of McNeese State Univ. - Student Lt. Gov.

Province of the Southeast

*Barbara Smith of Wingate Univ. - Gov.

*Stacy Kuntzman of UNCC - Lt. Gov.

*Nina Jo Moore of Appalachian State Univ. - Sec./Treas.

Province of the Great West

*Jeff Stoppenhagen of Boise State University – Governor

*Brook Adamson of N W Nazarene University – Lt. Governor

*Jeff Oldright of N W Nazarene University – Student Secretary/Treasurer

*Lacey Rammell-O’Brien of Boise State University – Student Lt. Governor

*Jeff Stoppenhagen of Boise State University – Alumni Liaison

*Miles Stirewalt of Boise State University – Student Historian

Province of Northern Lights

*Mark A. Fokken of Southwest MN State University – Governor

*Jason kemnitz of South Dakota State University – Lt. Governor

*Jaime P. Meyer of University of Mary – Secretary/Treasurer

*Tim Edland of North Dakota State University – Student Lt. Governor

*Heidi Uttech of Southwest State University – Student Advisory Committee

*Scott Dieterman of Saint Cloud State University – Student Advisory Committee

Moreover, if anyone has been newly elected, I have the Province Coordinator Guide book available for you to peruse.
Please contact me and I will send a copy to you immediately.

My next action was to identify each Province’s Provincial Tournament:

Heartland - 1st week of December hosted by Central Mo. State

Northern Lights - 3rd week in March, (Location TBA)

Greater North East  - 4th week of February hosted by Bowling Green

Lower Mississippi - Oct. 17-19th, 2003 hosted by McNeese State University

Southeast - Nov. 7-9th hosted by  Appalachian State

Unfortunately, the Great West has not responded yet.

Finally, I was able to procure the services of a dedicated travel agent whom I have used professionally and personally
for over 15 years.  Brenda Lahey will be at your service to book our future hotel and airfares for upcoming tournaments
expeditiously, conveniently and inexpensively for all PKD members!  Soon a new 800 number will be established for
convenient contact across the country. Watch the website for this link!

In addition to my specific Province Coordinator functions, I am also serving on the Alumni Relations committee for PKD.
My goals for the next two years in that role are to:

~ identify all PKD Alumni within each Province

~ establish a database of all alumni

~ create space for Alumni on the PKD website

Our alumni are a very integral part to our future success.  As each and every student graduates, a new building block
is added to “PKD’s Alumni foundation” upon which our organization is dependent.  But, we must start small; we must
start within our own local chapters, then gradually build up to the Province and National levels.  I will be working closely
with Glenda Treadaway, our Past President, in this venture.  I plan to publish and electronically transmit a “Province
Coordinator” Newsletter to each of the Province Officers outlining current projects, activity progress, and open channels
for your input.  This will also help each Province identify active schools and involve their alumni with PKD.

By keeping in touch via e-mail, phone or fax, we always have the means to communicate! My contact information is as
follows: helenkarchner@aol.com email, (610) 409-3000x23092 (w), (610) 489-6939 (fax).  Thank you for your attention
and please feel free to contact me any time!  I look forward to serving you during an enjoyable 2 years to come.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Public Relations Committee

Shannon Dyer

The focus for the Pi Kappa Delta Public Relations Committee is information and media.  During the next two
years, the PR Committee has set goals to give the local chapter information about PKD for media communication efforts
on and off campus.  The goals are as follows:

1.       A project has started to update the PKD history with the intent of re-releasing a two-volume gift set especially
appropriate for team members, alumni, donors, and administrators.  Pi Kappa Delta has a rich history emphasizing
forensic excellence, scholarship, character and collegiality.  Information that gives the local chapter resources to
promote PKD helps the local chapter maintain visibility, facilitate recruiting, and gain the prestige associated with a
national honorary.

2.       The committee also hopes to make national tournament press release statistics available following the national
tournaments.   Press releases are a vital part of local chapter recognition in their communities.  Material for a standard
press release, containing national tournament statistics, information about the honorary, supporting quotations,
descriptions and themes could be a useful resource for local chapters in public relations efforts.

3.       The PR Committee plans to encourage the use of the PKD website.  As information initiatives continue to grow (e.
g. The Key is now done electronically), the need to have quick and prolific access grows as well.  The Committee hopes
to see every local chapter which has a homepage, add a link to the Pi Kappa Delta website.  Additional web promotion
efforts in the forensic and the non-forensic world will be pursued as well.

4.       Finally, the PR Committee has a goal of increasing the name recognition of our honorary in the non-forensic
world.  Strategies are being pursued to inform potential graduate schools, law schools and employers of the vitality of
our forensic performance honorary.  The Committee hopes to see PKD linked with “The art of persuasion beautiful and
just” beyond the walls of the forensic community.  Those seeking employees or students with public performing skills
should equate PKD with a historic tradition of excellence and integrity.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Professional Development Committee

Shannon Dyer

The Professional Development Committee will be focusing on  professional growth.  Within the academic field of
communication, there are leaders and there are followers.  This Committee would like to see the honorary taking a more
active leadership role in the discipline of communication.  The Professional Development goals include the following:

1.       The Committee hopes to establish an undergraduate honors competition concurrent with the National
Communication Association’s fall convention, and there are plans to promote a monetary award recognizing outstanding
student papers.  Participation on one of these panel presentations of scholarly work is an honor appropriate for student
resumes. Attending NCA Convention for the undergraduate honors paper competition would allow PKD’s best academic
performers a chance to receive feedback from leading researchers and professionals in forensics and to interact with
the thousands of professional educators that make up the larger field of communication.  NCA is traditionally held in
November, so the deadline for paper submissions would be February of the same year.  The convention will be Miami
this year, Chicago in 2004, and Boston in 2005.

2.       And finally, the Professional Development Committee would like to explore grounded themes for the professional
development conference held concurrent with the PKD national convention.  Next year’s professional development
conference will be on the theme, “The Money Matters of Forensics.”  This conference will place emphasis on funding
opportunities, developing an endowment and providing support for at-risk programs, struggling for financial strength.
Local chapter polling will help the committee define other critical concerns facing programs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charter & Standards and Institutional Research

Dr. Tom Huebner

I look forward to working with both the Charter and Standards and the Institutional Research committees in an effort to
see Pi Kappa Delta grow and adapt to the changing forensics environment.  Accordingly, I have adopted the following
goals:

*       Develop and implement an assessment tool whereby we can determine the perception of PKD by non‑members in
hopes of helping to guide our chapter recruitment efforts.

*       Work closely with the Province Coordinator in identifying those chapters which have become inactive and
encourage them to become active again.  For those schools wishing to discontinue participation in PKD, I want to find
out the specific reasons in hopes of preventing additional schools from becoming inactive.

*       I want to see it become a "bigger deal" when a school charters.  I will partner with both the Province Coordinator
and the Public Relations Chairperson in brainstorming ways we can celebrate PKD membership.

*       I want to see these committees I chair facilitate a mentoring system that will enable new programs to be guided
through the initial stages of PKD  membership as well as tournament and convention participation.

*       The committees on which I serve will work with all the members of the National Council in helping to create a PKD
message we can sell to current and prospective members.

I look forward to the next two years of service and I encourage you ‑‑ undergraduate, director, alumnus ‑‑ to let me
know how we can better serve the needs of PKD.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Student Representative

Tomeka Michelle Robinson

I am Tomeka Michelle Robinson your new Student‑at‑Large Representative on the National Council. I would first like to
thank all of you for your support and allowing me to represent you. Over the next 2 years, I will try my absolute best to
promote this organization and to unify the students.

This organization is an honor to be a part of and I fear that so many students do not realize how great Pi Kappa Delta
really is. I know for a fact that until I attended the National Council Meeting in Fond du Lac, WI,  I myself did not realize
how much of an honor it is to be a part of this organization. My goals for the next 2 years are to:

1. Improve communication with the students: e‑mail is one of the greatest tools available to us, and we should utilize
this wonderful tool to the fullest

2. Promote the benefits of being a Pi Kappa Delta student: being a Pi Kappa Delta student is not just about competition
and neither is it just a "resume filler." Being a part of Pi Kappa Delta is about being a part of a dynasty, it's about
traditions, scholarship, excellence in more than just competition, and fellowship.

Again, thank you all for putting your trust in me, and with your help I believe that the 2004 Honorary at Middle
Tennessee State University and the 2005 National Tournament and Convention at Webster University can be everything
that our founders envisioned.

It used to be the practice to publish the names and schools of new individual members of PKD in the FORENSIC. In
trying to lessen our expenses for the publication, we have not published those names for the past few years.  We will,
however, post new members names on the website - welcoming them to our membership.  Please return to the
homepage of PKD and click on: "New Members".

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Editor’s Column

Dr. Nina-Jo Moore

Welcome to our new on-line version of “THE KEY”!  Please remember that if you know of someone who does not
“do the internet,” have them request a “hard copy” of the newsletter from either Joyce Krueger at the PKD National
Office, or from me.

We, the National Council, ask that you read each member’s column carefully, as they give ideas and direction as
to where we believe we are headed in the next two years.  We see ourselves as the premier forensic honorary
organization, and it is only with your help and ideas that we will be able to have others see us in the same light.  We also
ask you to read our Summer National Council Minutes, found on the PKD Webpage, because we covered many issues
that will be of direct concern to our membership.

As for THE FORENSIC, we apologize for the delay of the most recent issue you received.  We do believe that it
was well-worth the wait for it as it covers some important topics about family issues and forensics.  The next issue is due
out this Fall, and we are hoping for a mid-to-late October publication date.

I must also admit that I am very happy with the submissions I have received over the summer.  At present time I
have a total of nine articles out being read for possible publication.  We have one that has been accepted, and we have
one more that has been conditionally accepted, pending a few minor revision issues.

Of course, I am hoping that many of you out there had a very productive summer and were able to write some
things you might be willing to submit for publication.  For example, what I have received very few of since I became editor
two years ago, are articles of a “Forum” nature - shorter articles taking a position on a forensic issue.  Won’t you
consider writing one today??

I invite you to contact me with any concerns and issues you might have concerning our publications.  Please let
us know what we can do to make our publications better, more accessible, what we can add to the PKD webpage that
might be of help, etc....  Our publications can only be as good as the ideas and submissions you send!

As always - have a GREAT year this year!  I look forward to seeing you all “on the circuit” or at NCA!

COMMITTEES ANYONE????

Pi Kappa Delta continues to experience a problem with committees. Fewer members are volunteering for committee
assignments and less work is actually being done by committees. One action taken at our Summer 2003 National
Council meeting was to have at least one council member on each committee. Toward that end, President Susan Millsap
made the following committee assignments & directed the assigned people to recruit their own committee members.

Tom Huebner: Charter and Standards, Institutional Research

Shannon Dyer: Public Relations, Professional Development

          Susan Millsap: Convention Arrangements

          Scott Jensen: Tournament Arrangements

          Michael Bartanen: Constitutional Revision

Helen Karchner and Glenda Treadaway: Alumni Relations

          Sandra Alspach: Endowment

          Mark Hickman:  Compliance

          Nina-Jo Moore:  Nominations

          Helen Karchner: Province Coordinator

IF YOU SEE A COMMITTEE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SERVE ON, PLEASE CONTACT THAT COMMITTEE CHAIR(S)
